The fruit is tiny, only around 1.5 cm and delicious and sweet. The Sandpaper fig is found along riverbanks and in moist covered gullies along the East Coast of Australia from Mackay in the northern tropics of Queensland and as far as New South Wales to the south on the snowy mountain border with Victoria.
-The Sandpaper Fig, Ficus Coronata is native to Australia. It grows in riverbanks, by billabongs and in gullies. The leaves were used as sandpaper by the indigeoius population. ‑Fig Leaf is proven to lower blood sugar levels and is highly beneficial to diabetics. 3 cups daily. ‑Sandpaper fig leaves, roots and fruits have been used to treat diarhoea and dysentary, influenza, fevers, skin rashes and aches. ‑The latex sap has been used to treat skin warts, skin cancers and ringworm. ‑The bark of the Sandpaper Fig was used to make string the fruit is often subject to fig wasp… *grins .. it is an amazing process where the girl wasp burrows in to a fig losing her wings on the way, pollinating the fig and then starts laying her eggs. When the eggs hatch, the males hatch first and they dont have wings. Later the females hatch, the males are pretty horny by then and they mate with all their sisters. As punishment for that sin the males all unalive themselves. In this process of pollination of the fig by the wasps and the wasps reproduction carbon dioxide is produced in the fig which triggers it the flowers reproduction.. amazing symbiotic relationship… the fig also produces something which digests the now dead male wasps as nourishment The females then break open a small hole in the fig, make their escape and fly off to find another fig of the same species where she burrows in, loses her wings, lays her eggs and repeats the process…
