Local coun­cils are respon­si­ble for pro­tect­ing peo­ple’s rights in sev­er­al ways, includ­ing:
  • Anti-dis­crim­i­na­tion law

    Local gov­ern­ment staff and rep­re­sen­ta­tives are pro­hib­it­ed from treat­ing peo­ple unfair­ly due to pro­tect­ed char­ac­ter­is­tics, such as dis­abil­i­ty, race, reli­gion, sex, or sex­u­al ori­en­ta­tion. 

  • Code of con­duct

    Coun­cil­lors in Queens­land are required to com­ply with a code of con­duct that sets out the stan­dards of behav­ior they should adhere to. 

  • Human rights pol­i­cy

    Some local coun­cils, like Bris­bane City Coun­cil, have a human rights pol­i­cy that pro­tects rights such as pri­va­cy, prop­er­ty, cul­ture, and free­dom of expres­sion. 

  • Human rights act

    Queens­land has a human rights act that aims to pro­tect and pro­mote human rights, and to build a cul­ture of respect and pro­mo­tion in the pub­lic sec­tor.
